WINE TASTING IN PUGLIA
One of the walking tour that I propose in my catalogue is focused on two main aspects of the region’s culture: the knowledge of the Itria valley through the popular architecture of the “trulli and cummerse” and a special wine tasting in Puglia, in particular in the Locorotondo area where the love for winegrowing has been handed down for generations. The wine is produced in every corner of the region anyway, and is not only a resource linked to the tradition and culture, but also an important economic resource.
APULIA: A MAJOR ITALIAN WINE PRODUCER
First of all it is important to stress the fact that the region, with its indigenous exclusive wines, is the second wine producer in Italy as the chart shows. Beside the quantity, the quality of the apulian wines is more and more appreciated worldwide and some of the most famous varieties have been awarded with a DOP quality level: a significant deal if we make the comparison with other italian regions having a longer DOP recognition: this was due to the fact that only recently Apulia promote and invest on its wine-making resources.
In terms of terroir, the region has a formidable array of natural elements enhancing vine growth like the hot Mediterranean climate, maquis scents, persistent sunshine and sea breezes in addition to a soil composed of iron-rich layers especially in the areas near Martina Franca and Locorotondo, in the Itria Valley, where the experience of a wine tasting in Puglia reaches high levels of pleasure!
SOME OF OUR WINES FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE WINE TASTING IN PUGLIA
So let’s have a look to some of the wines you can taste in the Locorotondo’s itinerary:
- Primitivo IGT Salento. A still red wine of about 14% alcoholic degree a variety of pureness reaching 100% and coming from vineyards situated on a hilly soil, tending to be clayey. Its maximum expression will only be achieved after years, with the softness of tannins and a great complexity. In the scents it recalls the fruit in jams, dried figs with almonds, cherries in alcohol, mulberry, blackberry and peaches. Perception of aging over time with toasting wood; licorice, coffee and a spice touch dedicated to black pepper. As per the food pairing it is recommended with precious red meat, grilled food with presence of mushrooms.
- Primitivo rosé amabile (sweet). A dry sparkling rosé wine of about 11% alcoholic degree, a variety of pureness reaching 100% from vineyards located on the terraces embracing the town of Locorotondo whose soil tends to be clayey Harvesting is done rigorously at the end of August,
making sure that the degree of maturation of the grapes maintains good fresh/acidity levels and a sufficient alcoholic level for sparkling. The scents of bread crust and yeast are due to the 90-day aging; also crisp fruits like pomegranate, pink apple, cherry and grapefruit and a floral touch woof rose and violet. As per the food pairing it is recommended with cheeses and jams, fruit and seasoned salami.
- Verdeca IGP. A dry white wine of about 13% alcoholic degree, a variety of pureness reaching 100% from vineyards located at 450 meters on the sea level. After a fermentation in steel silos, the process is completed with an aging in bottles of about four months. The straw yellow colour is bright and lustrous with green hues, the taste is fresh, fruity and full. As per the food pairing it is recommended with lemon clams, calamari and baked pastries stuffed with ground meat and onion. Verdeca is one of the few salient exemple among the whites in a hot, red-dominated region like Apulia is.
Full bodied and powerful wines are obtained from these plants, unique in their shape and which sometimes are seventy years old but they are still strong and generously continue to give their fruits.
