VISIT THE SASSI AND THE RUPESTRIAN CHURCHES OF MATERA. We will meet at the Belvedere to have a general overview on the incredible landscape of the Sassi and talk about them. We will then go down and we will focus our visit on the Sasso Caveoso to discover its most suggestive spots and enjoy a wonderful view on the ravine and on the Park of the Rupestrian Churches. During our visit to the Sassi, we cannot miss the experience of living in an ancient grotto house thanks to an evocative reconstruction that will let you comprehend the city’s tradition. Going up again on the opposite side, we will reach Vittorio Veneto Square through the hill of the Civita, where Matera’s Cathedral stands, then we will cross the main street to discover the baroque palaces. In the afternoon we will move few kilometers away from the town of the Sassi to experience the charm of the beautiful Laterza canyon, a unique canyon of its kind: an enchanting walk through a deep and impenetrable karstic fracture where rarely the man could live. This characteristic made the difference with the other canyons composing the “Land of Canyons” so that it gives still today the chance to the habitat to be rich in vegetation and biodiversity, a favourite place for different species of hawks, herons and black storks, a breathtaking scenario that you will be able to enjoy slowly, from the different view spots during a walking tour of about two hours.
