Vieste belongs to the Gargano National Park and is located in the easternmost part of the peninsula, on a hill with two strips, the one of Saint Francis and the one of Santa Croce, shaping three beautiful bays. North of Santa Croce’s strip it is visible a picturesque harbor running along the old town coast, composed by medieval narrow alleyways. We will going through city’s main attractions, first of all we will detect from distance the Sant’Eufemia island, an important place both for archaeological and economical reasons, then with the private museum of malacolology right at the beginning of the seafront and, going up to the highest point of the hill, you will be surprised from time to time about the little beautiful squares appearing in front of you and overlooking the sea. We will also come across a big stone surmounted by a memorial inscription reminding the heinous events of 1554 when the turkish pirate Dragut Rais, landed on Vieste’s adriatic coast and beheaded more than five thousand people on the stone today sadly known as the “Chianca Amara”. Among the most beautiful monuments in the city, the Cathedral – Minor Basilica dedicated to the Assumption showing a nice romanesque style and placed in the highest areas of the city, close to the castle, one of the many Swabian fortresses of the region that with its triangular plan overlooks a long and wide beach; this one presents an incredible white limestone monolith, commonly known as Pizzomunno: this will be the boarding point for our meeting of the afternoon. Through this enchanting boat tour we will admire the many karstic grottoes of the Gargano eastern coast that will literally leave you astonished for its shape, as in the case of the unique Architiello rock, but also for the light shining inside some grottoes and, of course, for the beautiful sandy and rocky beaches that we will appreciate along our tour. At that stage, we will not miss the opportunity to relax and take the time for a dive!
