GUIDED TOURS GARGANO PENINSULA – VICO DEL GARGANO AND THE FORESTA UMBRA
TOUR DURATION: FULL DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS GARGANO DESCRIPTION
We will meet in Vico del Gargano, one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”. Dubbed the “country of love” because of the presence of the famous kiss little alley, place for couples and lovers who, crossing it, are “forced” to be in touch: it is not by chance that the town has St. Valentine as its patron. We will pass by this corner and through this narrow street we will arrive to an imposing square belonging to one of the three ancient districts composing the ancient village dating back to the Frederick II of the Swabian domination. We will find out anyway that Vico’s origin is much older as it is testified from the discovery of the prehistoric settlements in the near Foresta Umbra as well as the Iron Age necropolis of the Tabor hill which, according to tradition, it would have been the first developed and fortified center called Vicus meaning “group of houses, village”. The charm of Vico del Gargano today is connected to its authenticity and its gorgeous landscape: the most part of the Foresta Umbra, considered the green “lung” of the Gargano National Park, belongs to Vico’s area; It will be right in the heart of one of the rare primary forests that we will have our lunch, quietly sit in one of the equipped picnic areas. In the afternoon you will have the chance to explore a part of this wonderful ecosystem, so varied and rich in biodiversity assisted by the Gargano National Park staff, surrounded by the Mediterranean vegetation, the colossal heights of the beech trees, holm oakes, yews, limes and a rich undergrowth that despite the lack of light, offers a wonderful variety of plants and mushrooms. From July 2017, the Forest Umbra and in particular its monumental beech trees have been awarded as UNESCO World Heritage.
