THE BATTLE OF TARANTO – GUIDED TOURS IN THE NEW CITY CENTRE
The battle of Taranto is a guided tours in Taranto new city centre which will go through the places and monuments built in the city after Italy’s unification in 1861 on the remains of the ancient Greek city as well as on the ones of the Roman Municipium: countryside during Middle Ages, city with rich churches and palazzi starting from the 15th century; a tour to go over the time, from the glory of the Greek Taras to the dark twenty years of the Fascism, from the Roman domination to the 19th century “Renaissance”.
The battle of Taranto will start from the ancient Agora, Piazza Garibaldi incorporating most of the evolutions of the new town; we will move then to the adjacent Piazza della Vittoria that every year is the stage of the Easter rituals of the Carmelite Church, still alive in Taranto and strongly anchored to the tradition of the city.
We will then naturally approach a stretch of the seafront characterized by the imposing architecture of the 20th century overlooking the Ionian sea. Coming back to our meeting point along the first basin of the “Mar piccolo”, we will visit the Villa Peripato, an important green area and a significant site from the historical point of view: some surveys lead here, showed traces dating back to the very first centuries of the foundation to the early 20th century. These discoveries make better understand the history of the city and talk about culture, economy, rituals, wars and everyday life of the people who passed here and still walk around this place.
