GUIDED TOURS POLIGNANO ITALY – A BOAT TOUR OF THE MARINE GROTTOES
TOUR DURATION: FULL DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS POLIGNANO DESCRIPTION
We are in Polignano a Mare, the city of Domenico Modugno, an Italian singer known all around the world for his song “Nel blu dipinto di blu”. Few steps away from our meeting point in fact, we will attain the popular monument dedicated to him which stands on a charming landscape on the Adriatic Sea and the cliffs of the Old Town. We will then cross the bridge of the Lama Monachile, a rift showing one of the most beautiful scenery of the entire region on the seaside, while on the inland side it gives the chance to distinguish the remains of a stretch of the Via Traiana and an ancient Roman bridge standing lower than the one where we are. These two roman evidences show how Polignano has always been a strategical commercial crossroad for the contacts between East and West. We will then have access to the heart of the old city center through the Marchesale Arch and look for the most beautiful panoramic views that offer from time to time the enchanting balconies overlooking the sea. The central square will open to the visit of the Clock Palace and the Mother Church, a wonderful example of a temple showing a mixture of styles from Romanesque to Gothic outside and from Renaissance to Baroque inside. Going back to the arch we will take the time for an ice cream or an aperitif that here in Polignano are absolutely to experience for the presence of the many inviting outdoor bars.
POLIGNANO ITALY – BOAT TOUR
Right after lunch, we will move to our second meeting point for an unforgettable boat tour around the marine grottoes of the city: we will leave from the little port north of Polignano to admire this lovely stretch of the Adriatic coast known for the dark blue sea, the high cliffs overlooking the sea and the several caves among which the most spectacular, the Grotta Palazzese, shows off today an extra luxury restaurant that we will discover from the lowest part. Our tour will go until the St. Paul’s island, also known as the “Hermit island” which is actually a huge rock standing in the middle of the sea; we will then swim close to the “Pigeons cave” and in the late afternoon, we will finally go back to the port.
