GUIDED TOURS MANDURIA ITALY – THE NATURAL RESERVE OF SALINA LI MONACI – THE COLIMENA TOWER
TOUR DURATION: FULL DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS MANDURIA DESCRIPTION
We are in the land of the primitivo wine: vast vineyards and olive groves characterize Manduria’s countryside that goes from the city to the seaside: at the end of this road we will be welcomed by an imposing stairway supported by arches: we are in front of the monumental Columena Tower, a structure of the 15th century belonging to the apulian coastal defense system set for detecting the threats coming from the sea. Today the tower hosts a small ceramic museum of the 18th and 20th centuries that we will visit, thanks to the landlord who preserves and opens it to the visitors. Few meters away from the tower, a stretch of dune covered by the Mediterranean scrub separates a golden beach overlooking the Ionian sea from a lovely marshy area: it’s the Natural Reserve of Salina li monaci, an ancient salt pan that was probably used since Prehistory and where some structures for the salt stock still remain visible. We will walk around this enchanting wetland of about 25 hectares, where usually it is possible to notice from far different bird species including pink flamingos and black-winged stilts; in any case the vegetation and the small fauna living here has adapted to the particular salinity of the mud. Today this area is protected and embellished by sustainable structures and it is forbidden to the coastal traffic.
