GUIDED TOURS GROTTAGLIE ITALY: THE CERAMIC DISTRICT IN THE CITY CENTRE– THE PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES IN A LABORATORY
TOUR DURATION: HALF DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS GROTTAGLIE DESCRIPTION
GROTTAGLIE ITALY. The town of Grottaglie is located in the Ionian area, on the edge of a Murge haut plateau’s slope descending to the “Mar Piccolo” of Taranto. The surrounding area is full of grottos and natural quarries allowing a great quantity of clay, so that the city has been able to base most part of its economy in the major ceramics craftsmanship for which we have evidences since the 8th century b.C. and that still continues nowadays. The first part of our visit will be focused on the Ceramics district located in the ancient karstic fracture of St. George culminating with an arch of the same name where the heart of the ancient city beats. In this delightful district we will visit one of the handicraft laboratories where an experienced potter will show us the working techniques at the wheel and the ones relevant to the glazing of the artifacts in the most traditional and modern shapes and decorations. In the second part of the visit we will move to the Episcopal Castle, an incredible fortress dating back to the 14th century where we will notice how the two districts are strictly connected one another: in the ancient stable of the castle in fact we will find today the Ceramics Museum. Going on to the main square of the town it will be absolutely nice to notice that some balconies, panels and other ornamental objects remind city’s history and tradition through the art of ceramics until we will meet and visit the Main Church, a jewel of the Romanesque style from the outside, while inside it shows an harmonious mix of other styles. Coming back to the Ceramics district, we will take our time to choose and visit our favorite laboratory, and why not, bring back home a high quality souvenir!
