GUIDED TOURS GALLIPOLI ITALY – THE “KALE POLIS” OF THE IONIAN COAST AND ITS ANCIENT OLIVE OIL PRODUCTION
TOUR DURATION: FULL DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS GALLIPOLI DESCRIPTION
Gallipoli is a charming city on the Ionian Sea in Puglia, known for the beauty of the surrounding landscapes and highly appreciated for its precious old town standing on an island and connected to the modern city by the arches of a 17th century stone bridge . We will start our guided tour from Piazza Aldo Moro, a square facing the sea enclosing and protecting the so called “Greek” fountain dating back to the Renaissance, Santa Cristina’s church and the sanctuary of the Madonna del Canneto. Right over the stone bridge we will reach the Angevin Castle which defended all over the centuries the maze of narrow streets where the thousand-year-old history of the “beautiful city” took place. Right in the middle of the two main streets, the highest point of the island will reveal a masterpiece of the baroque art: the Sant’Agata’s Cathedral; renovated in the 17th century on a previous temple of the 12th century, it shows inside a real art gallery where some of the most famous artists of that time left their remarkable works of art. One of the main economic force enhancing all over the centuries Gallipoli’s trade is the olive oil production as it testified by the underground city composed by several hypogean oil mills: it is through the visit of one of these characteristic environments that we will realize how this product has been a crucial resource for the city.
