GUIDED TOURS CASTRO ITALY: THE OLD CITY CENTRE AND A BOAT TOUR AT ZINZULUSA CAVES
TOUR DURATION: FULL DAY TOUR
GUIDED TOURS CASTRO DESCRIPTION
Castro is a small town situated on a cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, in the area of the Serre Salentine. Recently the archaeological surveys in this area has been intensified and let the researchers come to the idea that here, after a long wandering, landed Enea who saw from far a temple dedicated to Minerva. The old city center is characterized by narrow streets starting from the main square where we will begin our visit. Here, close to the ancient Messapian walls, tower the imposing Aragon Castle, considered unconquerable for its strategic position between the sea and a high and solid natural embankment; right next to it we will admire the first Cathedral of the 9th – 10th century and the remains of a pre-existing Byzantine church. After lunch, the second part of our visit will be focused in a small area near the town, characterized by marine grottoes that made the town even more famous since they concealed several prehistoric evidences: especially the grotto of Romanelli and the one of Zinzulusa. The grotto of Zinzulusa represents one of the most interesting symbols of the karstic phenomenon in the Salento area: it is visible in a stretch of coast of great impact, rich in different species of plants and animals detectable only in these cavities with few other examples in the Mediterranean: our boat tour in the afternoon will go through the three different areas of the grotto showing remarkable different characteristics (excursion subject to sea conditions).
